Secretariat's Meadow, by Kate Chenery Tweedy Leeanne Meadows Ladin

" On March 30, 1970, Secretariat drew his first breath in a little white foaling shed on a historic farm called The Meadow in Caroline County, Virginia. Three years later he would leave the nation breathless as he captured the Triple Crown, shattering records and rivals alike. At The Meadow, America s Super Horse learned to gallop across its rolling fields and its loamy track. There, Secretariat first felt the calming hand of a groom, the taste of a bit in his mouth and the weight of a rider on his back. At The Meadow, the foundation was laid for a legend. Though much has been written about his spectacular racing career, the complete story of Secretariat s birthplace and the Chenery family who raised and raced him has never been told...until now. And a Chenery granddaughter is telling it. Secretariat s Meadow The Land, The Family, The Legend reveals an intimate picture of this storied place from the viewpoint of Kate Chenery Tweedy, daughter of Penny Chenery (Tweedy) and granddaughter of Meadow Stable s founder Christopher T. Chenery. Co-authored with Leeanne Meadows Ladin, the book tells not only Secretariat s story, but the story of an enduring piece of land where an empire built on broodmares eventually produced an immortal son. The book is beautiful, and contains a lot of family information and photos, and beautiful layouts. However, the title and cover is rather misleading. The book reads more like a geneology book rather than a book about a racehorsing legend. When I received the book I immediately sat down and started thumbing through it. I had assumed that the book (because of the title and picture of Secretariat on the cover)would be filled with pictures of Secretariat amongst some information about where he came from and the family. When I reached the portion about Secretariat, it was at the back of the book and only a few pages had anything to do with Secretariat. After I spent time pondering the book, I thought to myself that even though the author is related and had a personal interest in telling the story, I felt as though she was using Secretariat's popularity to sell copies. If you're looking for a book on Secretariat with great pictures, and history of the racehorse, this may not be the book for you. Now a coffee table book just about Secretariat would be definitely worth writing about! :)

If you loved this gorgeous and amazing horse, you must get this book. It makes you a part of his life and brings him so close, you feel you knew him. I have always thought that if he hadn't been a superstar sport horse, he would have been a star just for his beauty. I love all horses from minis to drafts. My life has been around Morgans and Friesians but Secretariat will always be the King of my heart. It is perfect that he came from a family farm and was loved and cared for people who love him. Thanks to the Chenery Family and the others who put this masterpiece together. It is truly fitting for Big Red to have this tribute from those that knew and loved him.

With all the passion of the great horse himself, Secretariat's Meadow takes us on a whirlwind ride about the greatest racehorse that ever lived. I grew up in the valley where the Tweedy's lived, and often rode our horses past their home. Penny's, and Kate's, connection to where I lived made his wins all the more special to me. Thrilled when he won the Derby, I watched spellbound as he swept the Preakness and then, yes, I cried at the perfection of his run into history at the Belmont. This story made me laugh and cry, and feel goosebumps again. Thank you for a wonderful, wonderful book!

My most favorite athelete....perfection with a heart and soul; the years have proven beyond doubt he is, was and always will be one of a kind. I doubt we shall ever see the likes of Secretariat again. He came along at a time when this world, this life so needed a living, breathing hero.....a wonder, created by God, to overcome every doubt and expectation of man. To show us all what it means to have heart. He was a horse, so all nationalities could love him. He had no voice, so every language could understand him. Everyone, everywhere was free to be inspired by Secretariat. But this book, for me, could have done with a little less family history I thought; maybe condense it a little more. With more about the breed and the racing world. So much was about the farm, the location, the families long history....as though all of this together, somehow created this great horse. What leveled all of that out for me, was to realize, basically, this book was written not only about Secretariat, but about the Chenery family....as a gift to them all, I believe. I think their family history is important to them, but I believe that Secretariat was a gift to the world....the Chenery family was merely the vessel. So in the book, I would like to have seen more humility, (less credit) and more awareness of their being chosen so to speak, as the caretaker of this awesome and amazing creature. None the less....I am glad I have this book, I have read it more than once....and it's a fine tribute to both a great horse and to the Chenery family.

OK..I was drawn in by the cover picture being a huge fan of Secretariats. I wanted to learn more about him but what I got was more, a whole LOT more and I really enjoyed it. As a person living in the great state of Washington who grew up in Maryland, it was like revisiting my childhood. Going through the pages returned me for a few hours to my youth and I loved it. None the less it is an intriguing read for anyone. So much history behind Secretariat's birth place. Th extended story of the family and the farm. Its rise and fall and rebirth again. The dedication of making it all work. Some of the hard to make decisions to keep it working such as having to syndicate Secretariat when it was not what Mrs. Chenery really wished to do but had to in order to keep the farm going. The descriptions of the large horse farms, the way of living, the care of the land and animals all recalled growing up in Maryland as the two are extremely similar so it made it even more special for me. The story of Secretariat 's birth and training as a youngster were the icing on an already tasty cake.

This book is a "must have" for Secretariat fans and admirers.....the author,Kate Chenery, Penny Chenery's daughter, gives you a history of the farm and background of the family that shows you the hard work, effort and determination that went into the creation of the greatest champion of the turf in the last 60 years. Big Red was truly surrounded by loving and caring staff that helped him achieve his greatness. It was interesting to read the history of the farm itself back to pre-civil war days....The pictures and comments from the people who lived thru his history-making career were fabulous. Kate Chenery did a first rate job in bringing to life her family's history and the thrill of raising and owning the greatest champion of thorougbred racing in modern history.I will always treasure my copy of her book and enjoy reading it again and again.Ann WalterSecretariat's Meadow
